New Cloudkicker Album: 'Subsume'

For the first time ever, Ben Sharpe's musical output Cloudkicker has an album for pre-order, tons of details have been released...

Literally just last week I was pondering if Cloudkicker would release the album it has been teasing all summer, and today while I was drinking coffee with a friend, my phone buzzed alerting me a new album was uploaded to his Bandcamp page (now just cloudkickermusic.com).

The new album, Subsume, features four new tracks and a bonus remix at about 41 minutes long (not including the bonus track) -- meaning we're getting some pretty hefty tracks here. And much like Beacons, the track listing (found below) reveals a short story/poem when read start to finish.

For the first time ever, instead of just posting the album one day with little to no heads up or promotion, Cloudkicker is allowing fans to pre-order Subsume for $1 (or more). According to Sharpe's blog, this was done because it allows people to get an email the day the album is officially released on September 14, and he said he would charge nothing, but Bandcamp has a $0.51 minimum for all pre-orders. The album will be pay-what-you-want starting at $0 on the release date.

The pre-order option also comes with a remix of the first track, "The warmth of the daytime seemed like a dream now," by Sharpe's brother, t16. The track can also be streamed for free on Bandcamp currently.

It's hard to gauge how Subsume will sound from the remix track, but my guess is that it will be a more ambient version of Beacons.

Comment below on what you think the new Cloudkicker album might sound like.

  1. "The warmth of the daytime seemed like a dream now."
  2. "A weather front was stalled out in the Pacific--like a lonely person, lost in thought, oblivious of time."
  3. "He would be riding on the subway or writing formulas on the blackboard or having a meal or (as now) sitting and talking to someone across a table, and it would envelop him like a soundless tsunami."
  4. "You could laugh forever but never end up happy."
  5. "The warmth of the daytime seemed like a dream now." (t16 remix)
